This isn’t an article, it’s a tweet, from a growing popularity WNBA star Sophie Cunningham. She’s having a nice run lately in social status. Went viral for being a beast on the court and pointing hilariously at an opponent during an on court dispute. Then Dana White had her be a ring girl for the latest UFC event. This tweet shows what feels like a growing consensus in the US among folks who have tons of influence and no business commenting on things they don’t understand. The conclusion seems to be that AI is bad and new data center development should be stopped. “Save our farmland” implies that data centers are stealing this land from the owners. That is retarded. If a landowner wants to sell their land to a data center developer, they have every right to. I hope they name their price and get a great deal. Prior to data centers, the demand for that farmland was much lower, and the idea of selling it for the amounts now possible was unimaginable for these landowners just a few years ago. Who are you to prevent them from making that decision with their property? Quite un-American if you ask me. On the AI side, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that AI is incredibly useful and will grow in that regard for the forseeable future. The data center development is driven by demand for AI. There is an insatiable demand for more compute from those who understand and use these tools. I believe we are in a modern day space race in AI where nation states are doing everything they can to foster growth of this new industry within their boundaries. I hope the US populace being convinced that “computers bad” doesn’t get in the way of the innovation and growth in this industry in the US. Let’s not spite ourselves into losing this race against the Chinese Communist Party.
